Modern Melting Marvel – an ode to ice cream

Some History
The history of ice cream is not certain and some sources claim it originated in Persia and dates back to 400BC.

Those recipes consisted of grape juice poured over ice and resemble today’s sorbet more than the modern dairy ice cream we have come to know.

Interestingly, ice cream in it’s modern form is fairly new and only became readily available to the general public as late as the mid-19th century after the discovery of the ice box aka the fridge.

Advertising this sugary pleasure almost leads me to link a liability clause to this post.
Please don’t think that by promoting this homemade melting marvel I’m in any way condoning the irresponsible consumption of this delectable frozen desert.

BUT you have to, absolutely have to, try the Homemade Ice Cream on offer at Summerfields Rose Retreat and Spa.

Just a short drive from Hazyview or Sabie, it’s well worth it to take the detour from the main Panorama Route.

How To Get There
Whether you choose to take the R537 (via Sabie) or the R538 (via Hazyview), it does not matter in the end. Both these routes will take you on a scenic tour of Forestry Plantations and spectacular views of the area and ultimately lead to the R536 on which Summerfields Rose Retreat and Spa is located.

The Menu
Our meander for the day started early-ish (9h00) and after visiting most of the farm stalls {Curios about Farm Stalls} along the way and a quick stop at Induna Adventures and Sabie Valley Coffee, we finally reached our destination at noon.

We were famished.

The travel party consisted of two vegetarians and the Gluten-intolerant Sprite. A quick glance at the menu yielded results for the entire troop and the vegetarians decided to start this gastronomic journey with a Tomato and Aubergine Tart Tatin (R50) served with tapenade and a small side salad.

Sprite had a Stacked Kiddies Burger (R30). Usually accommodating her dietary requirements would be a problem for most establishments’ waiters, but here we were served by Sam, who wasn’t fazed by anything except the thought of beetroot (you know what I’m talking about, hey Sam *wink*)

Our table was situated on the large veranda overlooking the herb and vegetable garden from where produce are harvested for the dishes on the menu.
This is a restaurant which not only promote but also practice a FarmToFork philosophy and organic lifestyle.

Even on this sweltering day a gentle breeze from the valley kept the travelers temporarily cool until help arrived from the nutriment brigade, in the form of scoops of Homemade Ice Cream and Sorbet (R20 a scoop).

These little colourful glacial temptations could not be left to ONLY be admired, as I was quickly reminded by my fellow travelers {especially those less than 1,3m in height – not pointing to anyone in particular}, and it almost ended in a struggle* amid the terraza tower.

After a quick styling and some pictures we gave each other a froid-ian slip° and delved into the delectable delights of the Passion Fruit Sorbet, Beetroot Sorbet and the Chocolate Brownie Ice Cream.

After a stroll in the garden we bid our hosts at Summerfields Rose Retreat and Spa a fond farewell and started our journey homeward.

While I’m writing this post I’m reminded of a poem by William Wordsworth (1807) titled The Daffodils. I can’t imagine what the wordsmith master would have written about Summerfields’ Homemade Ice Cream.

Permit me to end with an extract from the poem:
“For oft when on my couch I lie
In vacant or pensive mood,
They flash upon my inward eye,
Which is the bliss of solitude,
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the Daffodils. ”
